Meet Our Instructors
Founder, Director & Lead Instructor of the Funk’tional Nutrition Academy
Like many who become health practitioners, I first got into this field as a way to heal myself. After years of struggling with eating disorders, I went to dietetics school to become a dietitian to “fix myself.”
While I will always remain deeply grateful for the strong science foundation my college provided me (LOVE me some O-Chem!), walking away with a Nutrition & Dietetics degree didn’t solve any of my eating, digestive, or health problems. In fact, they got worse. (Awkward.)
Erin Holt
Around this same time, I was also studying meditation, energy medicine and yoga. Through these “alternative” modalities, I was finally able to dissolve my 13 year struggle with disordered eating and start to feel like myself.
I recognized that this unconventional approach could help others, too, and knew I needed to integrate this into the way I practiced.
But back in 2010, functional medicine and functional nutrition weren’t nearly as popular as they are now. There was no perfectly laid out path for what I could do. Since there were no clear next steps, I had to bushwhack my way and piecemeal my continuing education. Basically, I just figured things out along the way.
In 2014, I had my daughter. And promptly got pretty sick. It took me a solid YEAR before any healthcare provider actually listened to me. Through the tumultuous journey to find a diagnosis and through the years of research and self-inquiry that it took to heal, I realized massive gaps in the conventional healthcare model–these were the gaps I set out to fill with my own work.
It was my goal to create healing space, support, and solutions for people struggling in the same way I did. The people who were being failed by the conventional approach to health. Turns out, there was a real need for it, because my word of mouth referrals quickly spread, and my business quickly grew.
Having made a name for myself in the functional nutrition space through the Funk’tional Nutrition Podcast, a lot of practitioners began reaching out to me to ask “Where did you learn everything you know? What program did you take?”
I always have to chuckle. It’s SO much more than one program. As a questioner and lifelong learner, I’m always seeking more ways to further hone my skills and find new avenues for deeper learning.
After earning my B.S. in Nutrition & Dietetics, I went on to become certified as a health coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I completed an apprenticeship and yearlong training in Energy Healing with Elizabeth Guilbeault, and at the same time completed my yoga teacher certification. I happily received my IFNCP certification through IFNA and completed a year-long mentorship and certification for Functional Medicine through the Kalish Institute. I earned my Spiritual Coaching Certification through Institute of Spiritual Coaching with Jessica Flanigan along with a Transformational Eating™ certification through her as well. I’ve completed many programs through the Kharrazian Institute, including a yearlong clinical mastership. I’ve studied courses in Advanced Gastrointestinal & SIBO Case Management, Diabetes & Dysglycemia, Autoimmunity Clinical Strategy, and Neural Reprogramming—to name a few. I received my Health Transformation Accelerator Certification with Dr. Alex Golden and Megan Blacksmith. I’ve been certified in Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Neural Energetic Wiring, Hypnotherapy, Quantum Time Technique & EFT. I’m currently enrolled in a yearlong training program at Stanford to further my education in mind-body medicine. I’ve invested in top business and mindset coaches and have relentlessly studied entrepreneurship and marketing—so I can put all of my education and knowledge into actual practice.
It took me over a decade, and well over $200K in piecemeal trainings and mentorship.
My original goal with creating the Funk’tional Nutrition Academy was to save other practitioners the time, money, and frustration associated with figuring this stuff out on their own.
Back in college, I remember telling an advisor what I wanted to do after graduation. She told me “this career doesn’t exist.” That’s the moment I knew…I will have to build it myself. And that’s exactly what I have spent the past 12 years doing.
I am sharing all I have learned—through continuing education, clinical experience, and growing a business—with you here, in the Funk’tional Nutrition Academy.
As I continue to learn and grow—as a functional nutrition practitioner, entrepreneur, coach, and person —so, too, does this program.
